Omega 3 Rescue

Can Omega 3 rescue our health? First of all, Omega 3 is essential, as we cannot live without it.  Secondly, if we don't get enough we can become ill. We have certainly come a long way since the 1950's when Hugh MacDonald Sinclair, a nutrition expert at Oxford University, first identified the need for good fats in the diet, but have we come far enough? Sinclair claimed that most of the diseases of the 20th Century were caused by a diet too rich in bad fats, and he wasn't wrong. But it wasn't until the 1970's that the health benefits of Omega 3 fats first hit the headlines and even more recently that experts discovered the extraordinary effect that the Omega 3 fatty acid EPA can have on our health.

Basically, EPA competes with Omega 6 to be converted into eicosanoids and depending on which fatty acid dominates at the time, Omega 3 or Omega 6, these eicosanoids can either be anti-inflammatory or pro-inflammatory. What we need for good health is to restore the balance between Omega 3 and Omega 6 as unfortunately, over the past 70 years our consumption of Omega 6 has rocketed, and we eat far less Omega 3 than we used to.

An imbalance between Omega 3 and Omega 6, over time, leads to excessive inflammation in the body and finally to disease so not surprisingly, a lack of Omega 3 has been associated with an increased risk of developing a wide range of health problems including:
