Normal human hair grows at an average rate of about half an inch per month. However, if you are caring for your hair properly and doing all the right things to promote healthy hair growth and are looking after your hair properly then you can expect your hair to grow slightly faster.

On the other hand if you are not following a proper hair care regime and exposing your hair to all sorts of stresses and chemicals and you aren’t feeding your hair the nutrients it needs then you might find that your hair growth is slow and the condition of your hair isn’t as good as it should be.

So you need to grow your hair fast?

Well you are not alone. Many people want to grow their hair faster, particularly if they have some event coming up like a wedding or another celebration, the only problem is most of them don’t know where to start.

The first step towards faster hair growth is to familiarise yourself with natural hair growth cycles so that you understand what is going on in each stage and can make the best of it. One trick to faster hair growth is to maximise the growth cycle and minimise the amount of hair loss during the shedding stage.

So what are the natural hair growth cycles?

Hair grows in three distinct phases. The first of these is the growing stage or Anagen phase which involves around 90 percent of all the hairs on your head. During this stage, which lasts between 2 to 8 years most of the hair on your head is actively growing.

Obviously your own personal growing phase will depend on many factors including your age, state of health, whether or not you are taking any medication, your hair care regime and your diet.

You haven’t a hope of growing your hair faster if you don’t provide new hair growth with the nutrients and vitamins it requires before it even makes an appearance through the scalp as new hair growth. This means that you have to carefully consider your diet. If you want to grow your hair fast you need to feed it first from the inside.

A proper diet for faster hair growth involves more than avoiding junk, eating balanced meals and getting your five a day, it also means getting enough essential Omega 3 fatty acids into your diet too and you’re not going to get enough of these from most western diets. Sad as it may be, most of us are deficient in Omega 3 and consume far too much Omega 6. This has a negative effect on our health as well as on healthy hair growth.

The most abundant source of Omega 3 is in oily fish but we all know we cannot eat too much fish due to mercury and other industrial pollutants they contain; however, we can take a daily fish oil supplement that will do the job just as well.

The second stage of hair growth lasts for about 2 to 4 weeks and this is where the hair follicle starts to shrink as the hair starts to detach itself from the blood supply. This part of the growing cycle is called the Catagen phase or the degradation phase. Now only a small number of the hairs on our head are in this phase at any one time, roughly around 2 to 3 percent.

The third and final stage of the hair growth cycle is the resting stage or the Telogen phase which lasts approximately 2 to 4 months. It is during this stage that we start to see the hairs shedding. We all lose a certain number of hairs every day as you can see when you brush your hair or after showering. It is perfectly normal to lose up to 100 hairs a day during this stage but if you are losing something like 150 or more, this is considered an abnormal amount of hair loss. We’ll come to reasons for that in a moment.

What it all means is that at any one time, the hairs on your head are going through different stages in the growth cycle.

What can cause hair loss?

Abnormal hair loss can be caused by a number of things including stress, hormonal imbalances, allergies, infections, illness, medication, chemicals, and friction. Genetics also play a role in hair loss. If you are experiencing hair loss then you really need to identify the cause of your hair loss and to establish whether the loss is likely to be temporary or permanent before making any attempt to correct it. Seek advice from a professional.
