Fish oil can alleviate the inflammatory symptoms associated with allergies such as hay fever, asthma, eczema, hives and other skin conditions, and can even reduce the risk of developing allergic responses in susceptible individuals.
Research indicates that Eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA, an essential fatty acid found in fish oil, which is known to have anti-inflammatory properties, helps to modify eicosanoid production. Too many pro-inflammatory eicosanoids produced by the body is believed to be a contributory factor in the processes involved in an allergic response.
Conventional treatment for allergies usually concentrates on alleviating the inflammatory symptoms. Studies are suggesting that fish oil can do the same. In one study, researchers found that more than 40% of participants showed a significant improvement in symptoms after taking fish oil, concluding that supplementation with fish oil can reduce asthma-induced inflammation and improve breathing ability.
Several studies have found that pinprick tests on babies at one year old, whose mothers took fish oil during pregnancy, had a lower risk of developing allergies. Allergies occur when an individual is oversensitive to a particular agent causing the immune system to over react to an otherwise harmless substance.
The fatty acids found in fish oil are part of the Omega 3 group of fatty acids, which can reduce inflammation in the body, boost the immune system and promote a general feeling of wellbeing.
