Diet is the foundation for mental health. You actually need omega-3 for your brain cells so they function properly.

Fish oil information

As awareness about fish oil increases, more and more people are searching for information.  Many who arrive here have questions they want to find answers to.  Others are looking for information on how fish oil can help a particular condition.  There are also some that have heard about the extraordinary health benefits associated with fish oil for the very first time and just want to know more. Whatever your reasons, you have come to the right place.

To give you a little bit of background, interest in fish oil first began after Danish researchers found that the Inuit Eskimos did not have the same problems with heart disease and inflammatory conditions like arthritis that other westerners had, and yet they ate a high fat diet. What was it that made the difference?

Finding the answer to this question has led us to where we are today. The Eskimos lived primarily on fish and what we now know is that it is the Omega 3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) found in high quantities in oily fish that are so beneficial to health. The body cannot produce EPA itself but it can convert EPA into DHA if we get enough in our diet so it is far more important to ensure that we get enough EPA. In most of the studies conducted, it is EPA that is coming out on top as far as results are concerned.

Some professionals believe that a Lack of Omega 3 in the diet is the main reason we are seeing an increase in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases as well as certain cancers, mental health problems and learning disorders. The simple answer would be to do as the Eskimos did and eat more fish, but as our fish are contaminated, we are advised to restrict our consumption.  We would also have to eat a lot of fish to get the kind of benefit we are seeing from pure fish oil.

Here you can read more about Omega 3 fatty acids and EPA.  You will also find articles and studies on the many and diverse ways that fish oil can impact on the health and wellbeing of us all.
