Beginning on July 11th of 2006 at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington led by chief investigator Renee Stapleton in concordance with the University of Washington started a study to determine whether fish oil (containing omega-3 fatty acids) given internally is safe and effective in reducing lung and systemic inflammation seen in acute lung injury. This study is interventional, treatment based, and is a double-blind study.
Acute lung injury (ALI) is common among critically ill patients and is associated with a high case fatality. Only one intervention has been shown to improve survival in a large clinical trial, and new therapies targeting the inflammatory response are needed. Nutrient interventions may provide benefit; specifically there is plausible biologic rationale for administering n-3 fatty acids (n-3 FAs) found in fish oil to patients with ALI, as n-3 FAs decrease formation of eicosanoid inflammatory mediators.
Fish oils have only previously been tested commercially when studying ALI and the researchers in Washington hope to make private gain from this study. This study will explore an array of ALI’s including the effect of fish oil administration on several biological markers of injury and inflammation in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and serum, on pulmonary physiologic outcomes, and on clinical outcomes.
Thus far in this study it would be inconsistent to say that there is a large correlation with administering fish oils to those patients with ALI’s. In fact there is less than 20% whom received treatment that felt that any change had taken place. The results are still coming in from this study and possibly will show a more positive effect. Their findings will be published at a later date.![]() | ![]() | |
