The essential Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil can help to alleviate the symptoms of PMS (pre menstrual tension) including inflammation, uterine cramps and pain. In one study, half of the female participants were given fish oil for 2 months and the other half were given a placebo. After 2 months the groups swapped over. The results showed that the women suffered less menstrual pain whilst taking the fish oil.
No one really understands the cause of PMS, although one of the most plausible explanations is over production of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids. EPA or eicosapentaenoic acid is one of the Omega 3 essential fatty acids present in high quantities in fish oil and is known to help the body to produce anti-inflammatory eicosanoids.
Research also suggests that PMS could be a result of an inability to make gamma linolenic acid (GLA) so recommended treatments often involves supplementation with GLA. However, too much GLA can lead to an increase in Arachidonic acid that can make the symptoms of PMS worse.
Arachidonic acid is an Omega 6 essential fatty acid known to be pro-inflammatory. It is also released by the body in the second half of the cycle and prior to menstruation, resulting in increased inflammation and pain. Supplementation with fish oil containing high levels of EPA can help to counteract this effect and reduce the painful cramps associated with PMS.
