Fish oil is not generally produced from fish that live in extremely deep waters, mainly because they are not oily enough. The oiliest fish tend to prefer deep to middle waters, or waters nearer the surface.
The best and most suitable fish for fish oil, are oily fish with a high Omega 3 content, and particularly those that can reproduce quickly, as fish that can easily regenerate their population are less likely to have a negative impact on the environment due to a drastic decline in numbers.
A recent study has revealed that some of our deeper cold-water species of fish are nearing extinction due to commercial fishing methods; in particular, the roundnose and onion eye grenadier, spiny eel, spiny-black skate and the blue hake.
As our waters are now full of toxins, it is also better to use fish that have relatively short life spans, as they are less likely than very long living fish to accumulate harmful contaminants over time. Some deep-water fish can live as long as 60 or 70 years.
According to Ocean's Alive environmentally friendly website, fish that are high in Omega 3 and low in environmental toxins include anchovies, herring, mackerel and some kinds of salmon, making them ideal for fish oil. These are the fish that we use in our Pure EPA!
