We have all heard or read about of incidences of rare diseases, conditions and disorders that are horrific or shocking to say the least and we are naturally, desperately compassionate for anyone who has the misfortune to actually suffer from them.
However, some conditions seem particularly bizarre and which thankfully, are so rare, that most of us will probably never have heard of them. The following represents just some of these strange afflictions.
Alice in Wonderland Syndrome
This syndrome is also known as Micropsia. Individuals appear to have a malfunction in the way their brain processes visual information despite the fact that there is nothing wrong with their eyes. Objects, humans, parts of humans and animals etc. are perceived by the sufferer as being much smaller than what they actually are in reality. For example, imagine looking at your pet dog and seeing it as the size of small mouse or looking at another human who may in fact be six feet tall but who looks tiny and in no way a reflection of their actual size. Strangely, the perception persists even when the sufferer has their eyes closed. Some scholars believe that Lewis Carroll (who wrote Alice in Wonderland) may have suffered from this condition himself.
Jumping Frenchman of Maine Disorder
This is an extremely rare disorder first described by G. M Beard in 1878 and is believed to have been first observed in French Canadian Lumberjacks. Sufferers have a sudden and an abnormal reaction to stimuli. For example, when given a sudden command in a loud enough voice the individual will carry out that command instantly and without a thought, even if you tell them to hit out a loved one, or throw an object. Also, on hearing unfamiliar or foreign phrases they will often repeat them over and over again uncontrollably. Other symptoms include extreme jerky movements whenever a loud noise is heard, hence the “jumping” aspect to this disorder.
Walking Corpse Syndrome
People suffering from this condition may believe that they have lost parts of their bodies or even their souls and some might go as far as to really believe that they are already dead and are indeed a walking corpse, even maintaining that they can smell their own rotting flesh and can feel the worms eating at them. It has also been associated with psychosis linked to drugs such as amphetamines and cocaine and to schizophrenia.
Fish Odour Syndrome
A rare disorder where the body cannot produce a substance known as FM03 or monooxygenase 3 and as a result, its ability to break down Trimethylamine is impaired. The result of this is most unpleasant as it causes the person’s sweat, urine and breath to give off a very strong and fishy odour or a smell like that of rotten eggs.
Alien Hand Syndrome
This unusual neurological disorder is where one hand appears to take on a personality all of its own and acts in such a way that is completely out of control in relation to what the person wants to do. For example the alien hand may unbutton shirts or remove clothing whilst the other hand is trying to button up or get dressed. Sufferers will often attach a personality to their alien hand and will try to punish it for disobedience.
Capgras Syndrome
People suffering from the extremely rare Capgras Syndrome believe that a loved one or a significant other person in their life is being impersonated by an impostor. This can even lead to the sufferer attacking the perceived impostor. Sometimes it extends itself to the sufferer themselves who believe that when they look in the mirror it is not their own reflection staring back at them but the image of an impersonator.
Jerusalem Syndrome
Affecting around 100 tourists a year, it is a form of religious psychosis sparked by a visit to Jerusalem and is not confined to any one religion. Sufferers may believe they are prophets or messengers from the Lord and indulge in behaviours such as parading around delivering their own sermons, obsessing about virtue and cleanliness and will often ask sinners to repent their sins. The syndrome invariably disappears after a few weeks or when the tourist leaves the area.

All of these sound cool to the common reader, but it's probably very scary and depressing for the person with the disorder.
What an interesting planet.

every now and then, when I'm tired, things seem to shrink or slowly move farther away. my perception of time is also off where either i feel as though I am moving faster than my brain is telling me too and everything around me is slower or if I'm reaching for something or sitting down it seems as though it will never happen. I get a kick out of it sometimes and can't stop laughing.

This is an amazing site! Its fascinating to hear about all these different conditions! I came upon it just now because I have to write a three page report on a disease...I want to find something that'll interest me (pretty much everything on this page) cuz I write faster and much better when I am interested. Alien hand syndrome is very very interesting and so is walking corpse syndrome!

I have OCD
(obsessive compulsive disorder)
and some of the things that come with it are bizzare.
I also have a seasonal depression and the doctors actually suggested tanning beds!
I've been to several doctors and the emergency room in the past few years over these symptoms:
-Extreme lower back pain.
-Excessive day/night sleepyness.
-Headaches.
-Standing up and blacking out.
With X-rays and blood tests all the hospital said was siatica....
anyone have any better ideas? I hate living with this.

I have the Capgras Syndrome, and first realized it at a young age. I don't perceive others as imposters, only myself, and it only occurs when I think about it. However, the sensation is stronger each time it occurs. For example, when I was young it would last a matter of seconds, and the last time it happened it lasted about a half hour, which really sucked. Thank you for posting this info, as I had no idea what it was until now.

I am amazed at the number of people who cannot spell and can't help from wondering if this ties in
with some sort of progressing mental dysfunction on a collective level.
Editors comments : Not everyone who comes on this website has English as a first language, also not everyone has the benefit of top class schooling. I would rather people comment and be open about their experiences as it helps others, rather than worry about the correct speeliing. :)

This one is weird, I have and uncle in Montana who has it, it´s called Facies Abdominalis Dislocatio Abbhorrans (FADA, or Morgan-Ebber´s Syndrome). Excerpt from JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) website:
"Very rare disorded where the face of a person actullay is located on the stomach instead of on the front of the head. The head itself is without a face, completely smooth and blank. The stomach-face is practically fully developed, but the eyes have a white, opaque cornea and are blind and cannot move since the orbital muscles are absent....()
()....The nose and mouth are connected to the lungs and ventricle (stomach) through an extended trachea and oesophagus, respectively. They both extend upward through the abdomen and thorax, doing a 180-turn in the cervical area to join the larynx and, a bit further down, the cardia. The ears (outer, middle and inner) are non-existing, and so is the auditory nerves, so deafness is a trait of the disease.
The brain is normally developed and resides within the cranium as usual. The cranial nerves attached to the sensor and motor nerve endings in the face run downwards from the medulla along the extended trachea and oesophagus. The facial muscles operate normally on the stomach and the tendons and fascicles attach to the crista iliaca (hip bone), the sternum (breast bone) and the costae (ribs). The oral cavity and tounge are underdeveloped, and so is the taste sense (they can only feel bitter and salty tastes)....()
()...The gut organs (duodenum, ileum, jejunum, caecum, colon, rectum are slightly underdeveloped due to the extra space taken up by the stomach face.
()...The disease is caused by a fetal defect where the branchial arches which later will develop into the face migrates along the vertical axis and fuses with the gastric buds early in the first trimester."

on remedicated.com i read about this:
Genital Retraction Syndrome: People experiencing Genital Retraction Syndrome (or GRS) firmly believe that their external genitals (for males) or breasts (for females) are shrinking or disappearing. Far more serious than the oft-feared “shrinkage” caused by cold water or cold weather, GRS can be caused by a mental illness or by a cultural belief. Many cultures have an ingrained fear of the occult and believe that witches or angry gods can cause genitals to disappear as punishment.

how about this one! synesthesia. it's when you get for example your taste and sight mixed up, so trees can look "salty" and piano's look "spicy".
it's very funny how they tested if it was a real disorder, by taking a guy who linked the number 2 and the color red in his mind. they went to a forest and hid a number of 2's made of green paper in the forest. and of course you and i wouldn't see those two's because they would perfectly blend in with the forest.. but suprise suprise, the guy with synesthesia saw all the two's red and was able to find every one of them.
synesthesia comes in many variaties

The obsession to have body parts removed is body dismorphia, there was a case 5 yrs ago in England where a patient paid a doc 5K to remove his leg.
Procrastination is just a form of defiance.
I suspect alien hand syndrome is connected with split brain surgery experiments where the brain is surgically split to treat seizures. Neither half of the brain is aware of what the other half learns.

I have micropesia. I experienced or rather saw different objects being bigger or smaller than they are when I was a 3-7. It used to have nightmares because of it. Although I don't experience it anymore, when I'm exhausted like Tess, I do see images being different sizes.

I think I have a mild case of Alice in Wonderland syndrome. It happens at night when I'm really tired, I close my eyes and see this huge space where certain things seem enormous and others minuscule. I actually thought it was pretty cool till I realized no one else experienced this. I first heard about this on 20/20.
Posted by Lynseigh on 24 March 2008
Walking corpse syndrome is the most intriguing and thought provoking disorder I have ever come across..
Posted by Neelam Sunder on 19 March 2008
Thankfully I have none of these. Maybe "procrastination syndrome" should be on the list...or maybe not as so many of us suffer from it so its not that weird;)

From Brazil
There are a lot of illness and diseases we can understand or explain yet. They are very real for those who suffer and for their relatives. We are progressing although slowly. My oldest daughter is autistic. If she was leaving 300 years ago chances are she will be executed for being under the influence of the devil. Today we know a little about autism and every day we get to know more and more about all others diseases and disorders. Knowledge give us hope with hope we go forward.

Mirror syndrome as seen on House is not a officially recognised affliction. There was a single case of someone imitating people he was around, although h was an amateur actor so it may have helped. The only real mirror syndrome occurs between a mother and her foetus, and is much less exciting. Ironically, in the House episode, when House suggests that it's Mirror Syndrome and Foreman says "Giovannini's?", House pithily responds by asking him if he knew any other. In fact there is another, and it is the only recognised one.

To Megean:
I think the disease is called Mirror Syndrome. I remember seeing it on an episode of House.

To Aaron - you're referring to synesthesia
Posted by Megan on 29 November 2007
I would like to know if anyone knows the technical name for Mirror's Disease?
It is a disorder where a person does not know their true self and imitate a person with close contact to them by reading their facial features and emotions. They besically copy someone.
Does anyone know what that is called?
Posted by punk on 29 November 2007

there's also this other rare brain disorder. I do forget what it's called, but it's when the senses get all mixed up. You taste sound, you hear sights, etc. It's almost exciting to hear about that but people who have it struggle with it
