Strange Phobias
A phobia can be defined as more than just being afraid, it is an intense and often irrational fear of something that causes extreme distress and suffering when the individual is faced with the object of that fear or even the thought of it on occasions.
Symptoms include extreme anxiety, panic attacks, sweating, nausea, dry mouth, difficulty breathing, a sense of impending death, not to mention the associated embarrassment and feelings of helplessness that sufferers go through on a daily basis when trying to cope with their fear.
We can all understand why some people might be afraid of flying or of social situations, or are terrified when faced with a spider or a snake, but some phobias defy logic altogether and can be classed as particularly unusual or strange.
Here is a list of some of the world’s strangest phobias…
Allodaxaphobia - Fear of the opinions of other people
Barophobia - Fear of gravity
Chromophobia - Fear of colours
Dextrophobia - Fear of objects at the right side of the body
Euphobia - Fear of hearing good news
Francophobia - Fear of France or French culture
Genuphobia - Fear of knees
Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia - Fear of long words
PNEUMONOULTRAMICROSCOPICSILICOVOLCANOCONIOSIS
Ideophobia - Fear of ideas
Japanophobia - Fear of the Japanese
Optophobia - Fear of opening one's eyes
Plutophobia - Fear of wealth (I seriously can’t get my head around this one)
Selenophobia - Fear of the moon
Uranophobia - Fear of heaven
Every phobia originates with an association or a link that sets up a pattern of behaviour, sometimes that link is obvious, at other times there is no identifiable reason or cause for the fear. In all cases, however, phobias can be treated but the all important first step is to recognise that help is available and that you can conquer your fear and of course to seek out that help. In the first instance, speak to your doctor.

i have emetophobia, which is a fear of vomiting or being nauseated. i'm not as bad about myself throwing up, although i will avoid this for days. before anyone says it's impossible to not throw up - think again! the average person throws up ever year and a half. the average emetophobe vomits every ten to fifteen years. my problem is with other people throwing up. i can't be alone around children. they puke so unexpectedly. i have panic attacks if someone does throw up. i'm slowly getting better, though!

I really have a severe phobia to coconut! I know it's strange and don't know why but, even the thought of it gives me panic attacks and sweats (which i'm experiencing as a write!) :-( It's totally irrational! Anybody know if it has an actual name?!

I do not think having a dislike of something is the same as having a phobia. I think knees are ugly, too, but it does not scare me to see them. I hate the taste of both mint and coconut, but it does not mean that I hyperventilate if I have to eat something containing them.

I also am scared of large spiders >.<
I don't mind those tiny, tiny ones, cause they look cute...lol
But those big ones, and medium sized ones....(shudder) >.<

I'm not scared of water though, but actually lifting up my feet when they're underwater and I'm scared I might just fall and drown and die >.<

I am a recovered alcoholic (12 years), and remember well phobias (heights, newly met people, failure. authority, etc. ad infinitum) plaguing my life when drinking, and in early recovery.
Proportionate fear is a natural and necessary thing, ensuring that we are aware of danger as is presents itself (e.g.crossing a busy road). In my recovery program I came to see how my ego-driven lifestyle caused natural fears to turn into phobias. By denying or drinking on fears instead of facing them they had grown into monsters.
The solution lay in surrendering ego to a higher power - God, if you will, or cosmic conscience, whatever appeals. I have made a habit of handing over my ego to this higher power on a daily basis, and as a consequence my irrational fears have abated. This in turn fostered an increasing realization that my higher power has my best interests at heart, and further, encouraged and increasing faith in that higher power.
From this I deduce the following inverse relationship. Fear = one/faith, and conversely: faith = one/fear. The more I work on my faith by surrendering ego and accepting a higher purpose the less fear impacts upon me.

I sometimes get the fear that everything is fake and that when we grow up we will be sent to another world and be a grown up there and meet our real parents, I think the people who we are with in this world are just workers. I get very up set at times, but I dont know if I can call it a phobia.

Ditto on the faux phobias, some are real tho.
Anyway, the common denominator is fear, its a state of being, the actual manifestation doesn't matter. I was afraid of everything simply because I was afraid, afraid of life, afraid of dying, you name it. But then I found God.
Fear of good news is like fear of success, its another form of self pity, the insanity of wanting to cling to a sense of worthlessness due to fear of something as yet unexperienced, its "better the devil I know than the devil I don't know".
Its only when the pain of where a person is overwhelms the fear of what they must do (change) that progress is made.
Hence the old saying "pain is the touchstone of spiritual growth."

I have a weird phobia. I have a phobia of cars passing by. I don't like it. The cars just scare me when they pass by. I have to hold my breath when I'm in the car most of the time and the cars are just passing by. I need usually music to distract me from them.

I have globophobia- fear of balloons. Really, you can tack on that I fear birthday parties now, cuz everyone always has balloons there. Plus my friend has a fear of plastic-wrap. People get a laugh when they hear about us two.

We live in a society of faux-phobias. Many of these are self induced phobias that are probably acted out until they become a natural part of that persons being. Seriously fear of good news? I can understand fear of anticipation of news but fear of GOOD news?
