Devastating Self-defence Tricks Everyone Should Know
Imagine how you would feel if someone attacked you from behind, or pointed a gun at you or came towards you a knife. Not a welcome thought for anyone, no matter how tough you think you are, and hopefully it will never happen to you. But if it does, what do you do?
The following are 10 self defence tricks that just about anyone can learn and may help you get out of a tricky situation or even save your life.
1. The Heel Kick
The heel kick or mule kick is a devastatingly powerful back kick using the heel of the foot to strike your attacker. It has been called one of the most powerful kicks of all because of its ability to inflict a lot of damage without actually hurting yourself. So how do you do it?
If someone grabs you from behind then it is very likely that they will pin your arms so that you can’t use them, this is where this kick will come in very useful. You bring your knee up as far as you can and then flex your ankle so that your toes are pointing upwards. Stamp down your heel as hard as you can on top of your opponents foot. Remember this is the top part of the foot which is very delicate and susceptible to injury. If you have used enough force you will break the bones in your attacker’s foot which will effectively put him out of action long enough for you to break free and make a hasty escape.

2. The Head butt
The head is very strong and hard and can be a useful weapon when you have no other way of fighting back. However, you do run the risk of hurting yourself more than your attacker if you don’t do it properly, for example don’t bash your head on an equally hard head, you’ll end up with a headache and could knock yourself out in the process and then you’re done for. The idea of using your head as a weapon is to aim for parts of your attacker’s body that are not as tough as your head, such as the nose or face.
Step 1 – tilt your head forward slightly and tense your neck muscles ready for the strike, also close your mouth and clench your teeth
Step 2 – keep an eye on your attacker so that you can gauge where you will hit
Step 3 – with a quick motion lean back and then lunge forward to strike at your opponent being careful to hit only soft targets
An element of surprise also helps so you could possibly try tricking your opponent into thinking you are going to do something else and then butt them as hard as you can. This move can also be very useful if you are grabbed from behind as your attacker will be expecting you to kick and struggle whereas a quick flick of your head backwards will cause sudden and intense pain. Success of course will depend on how hard and sharp you hit your target and how accurate your aim was.

3. The Finger Stab
A very simple but powerful technique is the finger jab or stab as there isn’t much your attacker can do if he can’t see you. This is a particularly brutal move that can cause permanent damage to the eyes so use it only when you feel you have absolutely no choice such as when your life is in danger.
Bend your forefinger and your middle finger slightly and then jab them sharply into your opponent’s eyes before quickly stepping back and out of the way to make your escape. The secret to the success of this move is in the speed you can carry it out.

4. The hand palm strike
The hand palm strike is a basic martial arts move but unless you have trained in the martial arts you may find it more difficult to do. You can also cause yourself injury so is best not attempted unless you’re desperate or if indeed you have some training.
Step 1 - first face forwards towards your opponent and step forward onto your right leg
Step 2 - open your right hand with fingers neatly placed together
Bend your hand backwards slightly so that the palm is extended and the fingers are pointing upwards
Step 3 - using the power of your hips, swing forward and strike your opponent with the knife edge of your palm
Aim for under the nose, the brow or the neck and then quickly follow it up with another move. Your main objective is to get out of danger and fast.

5. The rapid swing kick
This one might take a little bit of practice first so don’t attempt it unless you are sure you can pull it off but it’s amazing what you can do when you have to.
Put your best foot forward and kick your target with the ball of your foot. Aim for the knees which are quite good as they buckle easily, or the groin area for the sheer pain involved, then immediately swing your leg back and at the same time get your other foot ready to kick in.
This can look pretty damn impressive if you spin round at the same time. There are variations of this kick you can try but unless you’re ultra fit and agile, stick to what you know you can do. Repeat it as many times as necessary.
6. The ear slap
The beauty of this move is its simplicity. However, despite being the easiest move to master it can still render your attacker immobile, if only for a few seconds, partly because of the shock as it won’t be expected, and partly because of the pain factor. Regardless, it could give you just enough time to get away and if not, to come in with a final killer hit that will.

One of the best things about this move is that you don’t need any special training and it can be performed by anyone with a hand. All you have to do is swing round and slap your opponent’s ear as hard as you can. With a little swing of the hips you can add more power and energy to your slap.

7. Disarming someone with a knife
Now we come to something a lot dodgier. Being faced with someone brandishing a knife is far from what any of us would choose to have to deal with but nevertheless it does happen so it’s worth being prepared. Knives can kill, especially in close combat. Obviously in these circumstances you have to do what is necessary to save your own skin.
First of all you need to avoid the blade at all costs. This could involve running away, trying any diversion techniques you can think of, maybe like shouting at an imaginary passer by for help, which may startle the attacker and give you time to get away or at least give you time to get a kick or a strike in. The idea here is to defend yourself first and create as much distance as you can between you and the knife. If you have no opportunity to escape and really must try and disarm them then don’t try and grab the knife, you will get hurt.

Basically when disarming someone with a knife, you have to focus your attention on the hand that is holding the knife, regardless of what else is happening. Grab hold of the wrist and bend it using all your body weight. At the same time you could attempt to get them to stab themselves, which may work. You could also try tripping them up, biting their hand, wrist or arm, anywhere in fact, and you never know, you might get lucky and they might just drop it. If they do, grab it and run like the wind.
8. Disarming someone with a gun
Again, if someone is pointing a gun at you, make no mistake, you are in grave danger. First try diversion techniques or you could attempt to engage them in conversation. If you really feel you have to have a go at disarming them try and grab the barrel of the gun with both hands deflecting the line of fire upwards.
At the same time kick your opponent in the knees or the groin and pull the gun sideways which might force your opponent to release the gun. As soon as you have the gun in your possession back up and create DISTANCE between you and your attacker.
If the gun is pointing at your head you may be able to swing your arm up and knock the gun away but you have to be quick. You should not attempt to disarm someone with a gun unless you are convinced they are going to kill you, in which case you really have nothing to lose.
9. How to run away
You may think that running away can hardly be called a self defence move but what we’re talking about here is defending yourself and sometimes running away is clearly the better option.
When running away from a pursuer the idea is to create as much distance between you and them as you possibly can using any means possible. It pays to run fast. You could also try creating obstacles behind you but don’t waste any time. If you are a bit of an idiot and stand there looking for a suitable object to place in their way they’ll be on you in seconds.

If they are in a vehicle and you are on foot, jump over a fence or change direction. They may get out of the car and come after you but at least you’ve bought yourself a little bit of time and if you’re in luck they’ll give up first.
Also, avoid large open areas where you can easily be in your pursuer’s line of sight the trick is to stay out of sight as much as you possibly can because if they can’t see where you’ve gone, they can’t follow you.
If you’re basically too knackered and can’t run any more you’re going to have to find somewhere to hide. The trick to finding a good hiding place is to try and hide somewhere they won’t be expecting you to hide and to make sure you have another escape route. The last thing you want to do is block yourself in because if they find you, you’ve basically had it. Emerge from your hiding place only when you are absolutely certain it is safe so be prepared to stick around for a while as they could be waiting.
10. Using your mind
It may seem strange but your best weapon in any form of attack is your mind and how you choose to use it. You have to stay calm and keep your wits about you and use your imagination as it could ultimately be the very thing that saves you.
There’s absolutely no point in learning all the defence moves under the sun or having a strong muscular and fit body or being able to run faster than the next bloke if at the first hint of an attack your mind goes into meltdown rendering you incapable of anything other than being frozen to the spot.
Yes if you are faced with a possible attack you are likely to feel sick, weak, and shaky and wishing you were anywhere else other than in the situation you are in right then and that is only the beginning, you still don’t know what’s coming.
The difficulty is you are never going to know exactly how you will react until you experience it and most people never will. You might find that the sheer injustice of an unprovoked attack causes anger to take over and propels you into a lean mean fighting machine that destroys your enemy in seconds, but then again you might not. Just remember one thing; you have a right to defend yourself using whatever means you have at your disposal.
Try anything that will surprise your attacker. Look over their shoulder and smile as if someone is really there even they are not, call out to them, even make up a name. The trick here is the element of surprise that will buy you a few precious seconds. Pretend that you are going to vomit or really do it. Try anything you can think of. You could even go to the extent of soiling yourself and wiping it on them. I mean, desperate times call for desperate measures right? Stay safe.
