The best fish oil? Ultra refined fish oil

With so many fish oils on the market today it can be a daunting task to try and find out which kind is the best. Do you opt for standard fish oil or one that has been refined? Ultra-refined fish oil has been through sophisticated and intensive filtering and refining processes to produce pure and concentrated oil that is as far as possible, free from contaminants.

When fish oil is extracted from the fish so are all the free fatty acids and toxins that are present in the fish, unless of course attempts are made to separate and remove them. Ultra refined fish oil is subjected to a process known as winterization. This is when the oil is chilled and then some of the saturated fats and particles that form at colder temperatures can be filtered out. Further filtering then takes place to remove mercury and other metals before the oil is converted to ethyl esters, subjected to trans-esterification, and molecular or vacuum distillation to remove other fats and undesirable elements and to concentrate the oil.

Fish oil that hasn't been through processes like this are lower grade fish oils that are much weaker in strength and are very likely to contain potentially high levels of toxins. Unfortunately, most fish oils you find on the supermarket shelves have not been purified in the same way that ultra refined fish oil has, consequently, a lot of the mercury, PCB's, dioxins, carcinogens and other undesirable elements, will have found their way into the final product.

Another advantage of ultra refined fish oil is potency. The methods used to produce ultra refined fish oil allow for far greater concentrations of EPA and DHA, for example, more than 70%. With standard fish oils, you would have to consume a lot more fish oil in order to get the same amount of these essential fatty acids. It takes about 100 times more oil to make ultra refined fish oil than it does to make the same amount of standard fish oil because of the high level of filtration needed to produce it. Only by employing these ultra refining processing methods is it possible to produce oil that is highly concentrated in essential fatty acids such as EPA and DHA and that contains far less impurities than other oils.

Consequently, when choosing a fish oil, if you opt for ultra-refined fish oil you can get a stronger more concentrated oil and can be more certain that you are getting all the important health benefits in an oil that is also safer for human consumption.
