Supplementing with fish oil containing the Omega 3 essential fatty acid Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) could improve concentration levels and attentiveness in children with symptoms of attention deficit disorder. Several research studies in both Australia and the UK have found that children who took fish oil supplements containing this fatty acid showed a significant increase in attentiveness leading to an overall improvement in performance at school.
The results of research conducted in Adelaide by the University of South Australia and CSIRO Nutrition released in 2005 involving children with ADHD related problems, found that those who received fish oil supplements showed a significant increase in attention. The same results were not seen in the children who received a placebo.
Similarly, the results of a series of studies conducted in Durham, UK, suggest that fish oil can make a remarkable difference to attention and concentration enabling children to attain better results at school. One trial by Durham Local Education Authority in collaboration with Oxford University and The Dyslexia Research Trust in 2002, found that the children who received fish oil made improvements in reading and spelling sometimes by as much as several years.
More recently, in March 2006, the Durham trials released the results of their latest study where teenagers with ADHD related problems were given fatty acid supplements. Many had difficulty concentrating and staying focused on tasks. Despite being average or above average ability wise, their literacy skills had suffered and they were not achieving what they were capable of.
At the beginning of the trial, 94% were rated as moderate to severe on inattention scale ratings, but after only 3 months, this had fallen to just 17%.
Attention deficit disorder is characterised by an apparent inability to focus or pay attention for any length of time. This obviously has serious implications with regard to learning. Children with ADD will often show additional symptoms such as depression and low self-esteem, which can be made even worse if they fall behind at school. There is a also a substantial amount of evidence indicating that many of the symptoms associated with learning and behaviour disorders such as ADD and ADHD, amongst others, could actually be a result of Omega 3 fatty acid deficiencies.
Certainly, the brain needs EPA in order to function properly. Professionals believe that this fatty acid, which is found in high quantities in oily fish, helps the brain to work more efficiently by facilitating better connections in the neural networks in the brain.Omega 3 fish oils Pure EPA is available exclusively from mind 1st.
