The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of fish oil supplements in maintaining weight in people with disease-related weight loss and/or cachexia. Adrian Dobs is the head investigator on this study at John Hopkins University, at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
Participants of this study were either given a placebo, corn syrup, or given supplements of fish oils for three months. Each subject kept a food diary and went through several interviews, by phone and in person, and filled out questionnaires of their current function and health related status.
In this study they wanted to achieve three main points: to evaluate the safety and efficacy of fish oils vs. corn oil in the maintenance of weight and lean body mass in patients with disease-related weight loss. To understand the mechanism of fish oil effect on health maintenance by evaluating the anti-inflammatory, anti-catabolic, anti-oxidant and anabolic actions of these compounds and to document the effect of our interventions on quality of life and functional status.
Weight loss commonly has resulted in poorer prognosis, functional status, and/or quality of life. In spite of the high morbidity and mortality associated with cachexia, normal mainstream treatment does not sustain weight and although nutritional supplements are commonly used, many of these have not been tested in clinical trials. This is what they have tried to achieve.
The results published by the Food and Drug administration under trial numbers P50 AT000437; JHM - IRB # 03-02-10-12, have shown interesting results. This study began in October 2004 has seemed to show that supplementing patients diets with fish oils after a disease related have indeed helped in maintaining weight of disease caused weight loss. Though most subjects did not gain weight, maintaining was key in much (54%) of the patients after three months
