Omega 3 essential fatty acids are needed for normal growth and development in children. Of primary importance is the omega 3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which is essential for the development of nervous tissue. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is also important in human development.
During the last three months of pregnancy, the baby’s brain and retina develop. The baby needs adequate amounts of DHA for nervous tissue development. The baby continues to need high levels of essential fatty acids throughout the first two years of life, as he continues to grow brain tissue.
There is evidence that omega 3 EFA’s are necessary for the development of intelligence and for emotional health in children, as well. Studies in children with depression and bipolar disorder have demonstrated that omega 3 oils can produce significant improvement in mood disorders in children. There is also anecdotal information that suggests that children with learning and behavioral disorders, ADHD and autism may also benefit from taking omega 3 oils.
Establishing Therapeutic Dosage Omega 3 Children
It is difficult to establish therapeutic dosage of omega 3 oils in either adults or children. Because fatty acids are macronutrients, there are no recommended daily allowances for them. Therapeutic dosage may depend on what the intended effect is.
Some sources recommend at least 500mg of EPA a day and 1000 mg of EPA a day, for older children. Fortunately, it is nearly impossible to take too much omega 3 EFA.
What is more important in providing therapeutic dosage omega 3 children’s supplementation is giving an adequate omega 6:omega 3 ratio. As in adults, the ratio should be about 4:1. This may be best achieved both by limiting the amounts of omega 6 oils and by supplementing omega 3 oils. A Mediterranean diet provides a more healthy ratio of omega oils than the typical American diet does.
It is also important to make sure that the supplement is purified so that all toxins are removed. Some omega oil supplements, such as cod liver oil, also contain vitamins A & D, and it is important to make sure the maximum RDA’s of those vitamins is not exceeded.Omega 3 fish oils Pure EPA is available exclusively from mind 1st.
