Refrigerated Fish Oil Omega 3

Always purchase fish oil from the refrigerated section.  Even then, there are some concerns.  There may have been lapses in refrigeration, or the fish may have been allowed to ferment (read:  decompose) before the fish oil was rendered.  In refrigerated fish oil, omega 3 EFA’s (essential fatty acids) are present in adequate amounts.  Fish oil quickly becomes rancid, however, and the EFA’s oxidize into metabolites that can be harmful instead of helpful.

You have the best chance of getting fresh fish oil if it is refrigerated and in an opaque bottle.  When you get it home, it should be kept refrigerated and used within a couple of months.  If your fish oil tastes strongly “fishy” and you find yourself burping fishy tasting gas, the fish oil is probably rancid and has begun to spoil.

Unless it is continuously refrigerated, fish oil omega 3 EFA’s can break down.  One way to avoid this problem is to take fish oil capsules.  Freshly made, sterile fish oil is placed inside sterile capsules.  As long as the capsules are not perforated, they stay fresh for several months.  Fish oil capsules do not need to be refrigerated.  If you find yourself with fishy burping or excessive flatulence, however, the fish oil may have been rancid before it was inserted into the capsules.

Sometimes manufacturers add vitamin E to fish oil.  Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and acts as a natural preservative for the fish oil.

Because of the potential problems in manufacture and shipping of fish oil, it is important to buy from a reputable manufacturer.  This is one instance where cheaper is probably not better.  It’s worth paying a higher price to make sure you get the highest quality, freshest fish oil supplement possible.  After all, it’s your good health you are paying for.
