Omega 3 from Algae Oil

Omega 3 algae oil is a relatively new product that has some decided benefits over other omega 3 supplements.  Most people take fish oil in order to get adequate amounts of omega 3, and those who prefer not to take fish oil usually take flaxseed oil.  These are not the only omega 3 supplements, but they are the most frequently used ones.  Omega 3 from algae oil may replace both of them.

Fish Oil

Historically, there has been concern with taking fish oil because of the potential for contamination with heavy metals and pesticides.  Modern processing methods have alleviated these fears.  Fish oil that is “pharmaceutical grade,” “ultrarefined” or “molecularly refined” is available, and it has all the impurities removed.

Some vegetarians are reluctant to take fish oil supplements because they do not eat meat.

In addition, some people are concerned about worldwide overfishing and the potential pressure fish oil manufacturing can put on threatened fish populations.

Flaxseed Oil

Flaxseed oil contains a different type of omega 3 oil than fish oil does.  Flaxseed oil is very high in omega 3’s, but it only contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).  Our bodies require the omega 3’s that are found in fish, EPA and DHA.  We do convert ALA to EPA and DHA, but at a very low rate.  You have to take about 10 grams of flaxseed oil to finally get the same amount of EPA and DHA that you would get in 1 gram of fish oil.

Omega 3 Algae Oil

The fish get their omega 3 oils from algae.  Plants manufacture nutrients, and algae manufacture omega 3’s.  Researchers have developed a fermentation method that allows them to harvest omega 3 essential fatty acids from algae.

Omega 3 algae oil is nutritionally identical to fish oil.  It contains DHA and EPA.  But it is not an animal product.  It conserves fish resources while providing us with an excellent source of omega 3 essential fatty acids.  Algae oil could replace both fish oil and flaxseed oil as an omega 3 supplement in the future.
