If you suffer from food allergies then you might want to consider taking Omega 3 fish oil supplements, provided of course that you are not allergic to fish. Research studies have indicated that fish oil might be helpful in preventing allergies from developing in the first place, and that it can alleviate inflammation, a primary response in any allergic reaction.
If you are lacking in the essential Omega 3 fatty acids Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) then you are more likely to suffer from allergies in general. The reality is that most of us don't get enough Omega 3 in the diet and this could explain why allergies, including food allergies, are on the increase. We are also consuming too much of Omega 6 at the expense of our health.
Symptoms associated with Omega 3 fatty acid deficiency
Research by the Leipzig allergy risk study found that if the colostrum in breast milk showed high levels of Omega 6, then the baby is more likely to develop an allergy to cow's milk. Also, if the breast milk showed low levels of Omega 3 then the baby was more likely to develop allergies in general. The results of this study were published in the April 2004 issue of Allergy.
Another study conducted by the University of Western Australia and published in the December 2003 issue of Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology found that babies whose mothers took fish oil whilst they were pregnant, were less likely to develop allergies to foods like egg.
Allergies occur when the immune system mistakenly identifies a substance as being harmful and reacts, often dramatically, to this allergen. One of the main responses by the body to coming into contact with an allergen is inflammation. The Omega 3 fatty acid EPA in fish oil is known to have powerful anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce inflammation by modifying eicosanoid production so that fewer pro-inflammatory eicosanoids are produced. EPA basically competes with the Omega 6 fatty acid Arachidonic acid (AA) to produce either anti-inflammatory or pro inflammatory eicosanoids.
Supplementing with fish oil with a high EPA content can help to balance the immune system. It can also offer preventative benefits against heart disease, arthritis and other inflammatory disorders and generally promote a feeling of wellbeing.![]() | ![]() | |
