Diet is the foundation for mental health. You actually need omega-3 for your brain cells so they function properly.

Omega 3 Fatty Acid Supplements
There are many different kinds of omega 3 fatty acid supplements. If
you are considering taking one, here are ten things you need to know.
Omega 3 Fatty Acid Supplements with Fish Oil
- Fish oil supplements contain EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic
acid). They do not contain ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). Most omega
3 research to date has shown the benefits of EPA and DHA. ALA has been
largely ignored, because our bodies convert it to EPA and DHA. New
evidence suggests that ALA may have some benefits of its own, however.
- Fish oil is made from deep, cold water fish. These fish concentrate
environmental toxins, such as heavy metals and pesticides, which are found
in these waters, in their fat. Fish oil can, therefore, contain high
levels of these toxins. Make sure to use purified, toxin-free and mercury-free
fish oil supplements such as Pure EPA
- Fish liver oil also contains vitamins A and D. You can get too much
vitamin A, so follow dosing directions carefully.
Omega 3 Fatty Acid Supplements with Flaxseed
- Flaxseed oil contains both omega 3 and omega 6 oils. The ratio of
omega 6 to omega 3 oils in flaxseed is 2:1, which is a healthy ratio. Few
people who eat western diets need supplemental omega 6 oils, however, as
they get plenty of it.
- Flaxseed supplements do not contain EPA or DHA. They only contain
ALA. Although our bodies do convert this to EPA or DHA, only a small
percentage of the ALA is converted.
- Most of the research to date has been done on fish oil supplements, so
not as much is known about the benefits of flaxseed and other botanical supplements.
- Botanical supplements, such as flaxseed, also contain newly discovered
phytonutrients, such as lignens, which are also important to health.
Other Facts
- There is some evidence that a lack of vitamin E interferes with omega 3
absorption. Many manufacturers are adding vitamin E (or tocopherols)
to their omega 3 supplements.
- Omega 3 oils, whether from fish, flaxseed or other sources are very perishable
and should be refrigerated at all times. Supplements in capsule form
and whole flaxseed have longer and do not have to be refrigerated.
- Pure EPA is the strongest, cleanest fish oil on the world market.
