Diet is the foundation for mental health. You actually need omega-3 for your brain cells so they function properly.

Omega 3: Does It Help Aches and Pains?

Most people who take an omega 3 supplement do so for cardiovascular health.  Research is finding, however, the omega 3 essential fatty acids have many other health benefits.  One question that researchers have asked is, “Omega 3: Does it help aches and pains?”

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Most of the research on the use of omega 3 in treating aches and pains has focused on rheumatoid arthritis.  Here, the research is very encouraging.  Several studies have reported that people with rheumatoid arthritis who take omega 3 experience:

Some people have even been able to stop taking anti-inflammatory medications after adding omega 3 supplements to their diet.  Most people require around 3 grams/day of omega 3, and the results may not be felt for up to 12 weeks after starting omega 3 therapy.

Osteoarthritis

Less research has been done on other conditions where people suffer aches and pains, but there is evidence that it helps in osteoarthritis, too.  Test tube studies have shown that omega 3 decreases inflammation in cartilage, and that it blocks cartilage-destroying enzymes.  People with osteoarthritis who use omega 3 supplements report that it is easier to walk and less painful to grip things after adding omega 3 to their diets.

Fibromyalgia

Anecdotal research suggests that omega 3 essential fatty acids can help relieve the aches and pains of fibromyalgia.  In addition, omega 3 can help control some of the problems often associated with fibromyalgia, such as irritable bowel syndrome.

The answer to the question, “Omega 3:  Does it help aches and pains?” is a yes in some instances.  In other cases we have to be more cautious and say, “Maybe.”  In any case, it is one of those things that probably won’t hurt and might help.

If you have a bleeding disorder, take blood thinners or aspirin, or have severe congestive heart failure, you should check with a doctor before taking omega 3 supplements.  If you have fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis or any other condition that involves aches and pains, it may be useful to consider taking omega 3.  It could improve your symptoms and make it easier for you to function without pain.
