Omega 3 Cream Eczema

Eczema is a distressing skin condition that occurs in people from infancy through old age.  It causes red, raised patches of skin with blister-like lesions and intense itching.  Oozing sores and ulcers may develop, and infections frequently result from scratching.

There are two primary types of eczema:  allergic and atopic.  Both have an allergic component, but atopic eczema is associated with asthma and other reactive diseases. Atopic eczema tends to run in families, and usually appears before the age of 5.

Eczema is usually treated with creams and ointments to condition and heal the skin.  Sometimes the creams contain steroids to decrease inflammation and itching.  Occasionally, oral steroids are used for their anti-inflammatory effect.  Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) do not help the inflammation in eczema, and may even make it worse.

Omega 3 fatty acids exert an anti-inflammatory effect at the cellular level, and it is hypothesized that omega 3’s may be beneficial in controlling eczema.  Like NSAIDs, omega 3’s keep COX enzymes from converting arachadonic acid into prostaglandins.  However, omega 3’s also prevent LOX enzymes form converting arachadonic acid into leukotrienes. Leukotrienes are present in eczema (and in asthma) and cause the inflammation.

Omega 3 cream eczema treatments are helpful in reducing the itching and inflammation and in reducing the size of eczema outbreaks.  Omega 3’s do not carry the risk of systemic side effects that steroid creams do, and many people find them just as effective as steroids.

Emu oil is an omega 3-rich oil that has been traditionally and successfully used by Maori people to treat eczema and other skin disorders.  Other omega 3 cream eczema treatments are also available.

Omega 3 supplements are helpful in treating eczema.  Studies of people with eczema have shown excellent improvement in inflammation and itching by adding an omega 3 supplement to their diets.

Omega 3 supplements and omega 3 creams are helpful, non-steroidal treatments for eczema.
