To improve your nutrition, omega 3 fish oil is an excellent supplement to try. Most western diets are rich in omega 6 fatty acids and have insufficient amounts of omega 3 fatty acids. Fish oil is a good way to improve the balance between omega 6 and omega 3 oils in your diet.
Fish oil is rich in the omega 3 essential fatty acids (EFA’s) eocosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These nutrients are necessary for growth and development, especially of nervous system tissue. They may play a role in cognitive function and emotional health, and they reduce inflammation and help prevent chronic diseases, such as arthritis and heart disease.
Pregnancy
Brain and nervous tissue develop rapidly during the final three months of fetal
development. DHA and, to a lesser extent, EPA are necessary for brain
development. About 8% of the brain is composed of omega 3 EFA’s. It
follows that adequate amounts of omega 3 oils during pregnancy is necessary
for healthy brain development in the fetus.
Infancy
Brain development continues in humans through the first two years of life,
so it is important to ensure than infants get adequate amounts of omega 3
EFA’s. Breast milk contains omega 3 EFA’s, so breast fed
infants do not need supplements. Infant formula contains controlled
amounts of DHA and EPA, too. Research has not established whether older
infants, toddlers and children can benefit from fish oil supplements or not.
Adults
Research has established that for adult nutrition, omega 3 fish oil supplementation
has benefits. It protects against cardiac disease, arthritis and other
chronic inflammatory illnesses. Research is ongoing to determine other
benefits of omega 3 fish oil.
Precautions
Some people should take care with supplementing their nutrition with omega
3 fish oils. People with congestive heart failure or bleeding problems
(including those who take blood thinners) should check with a physician before
taking fish oil supplements.
