Diet is the foundation for mental health. You actually need omega-3 for your brain cells so they function properly.

Nile Perch Omega 3

Nile perch is a white-fleshed fish that lives in Lake Victoria in Africa.  It is prized both for eating and for fish oil production.  It is a white fish, which most people prefer over fatty fish, but the Nile perch omega 3 level is the highest for any fish in the world.

African Great Lakes Fishing Industry

Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania all border Lake Victoria, which is the largest fresh water lake in the world.  The fishing industry is important to the economy of all three Great Lakes countries.  Nile perch, the primary fish in the lake, is prized by Western Europeans, Asians and Australians for its white flesh and delicate flavor.  As the availability of other white fish has declined, the market for Nile perch has increased, and several hundred tons of Nile perch fillets are exported each month from the region.  This is a huge factor in the economy of the area.  In 1991, Uganda alone exported over $US78 billion in fish fillets.

The African drought has impacted the Great Lakes fishing industry.  The level of Lake Victoria has dropped considerably, which, along with overfishing, has caused a drop in the amount of fish in the lake.  In 1980, Nile perch comprised 90% of the biomass in Lake Victoria; in 2005 it was down to 50%.  Competitive fish species are re-emerging in the lake, including a species that was previously thought to be extinct, haplochromis.

Competition for the European fish market and increased transportation costs have cut into the profit margin for Nile perch fillets.  The fishing industry is responding by developing better fishing practices and other ways to use the fish, such as Nile perch omega 3 oil processing.

Lake Victoria cannot sustain the current demand for Nile perch in the long term.  As noted above, fish stock is rapidly diminishing and the worldwide demand for fish is increasing.  The fishing industry is exploring ways to continue to meet the demand and to maximize the market potential without bringing Nile perch to the point of extinction.  Some of the options they are exploring are aquaculture and improved fishing and fish processing technologies.

With careful management, Nile perch can continue to be a major export for the Great Lakes region and a major source of omega 3 fish oil for the world.
