In Portland, Oregon at the Oregon Health and Science University there is a study currently being conducted on what effects fish oils may have on patients with depression that are also suffering from multiple sclerosis. This study began in May of 2005 and could possibly be continue taking subjects through May of 2009.
Lynn Shinto is the principal investigator of this study. This interventional treatment, randomized, double blind, placebo control study is based around people diagnosed with MS who are also diagnosed with moderate depression and are currently taking antidepressants. For three months each group will be split up into a control group, receiving placebo, and a study group to receive the fish oil supplement. After the three months they will have a choice to continue their treatment or be excused from the study. They will remain on their antidepressants throughout their time in the study.
The evidence from this study show that the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil supplements can significantly reduce depression with a low risk of side effects. The researchers in this study, through their studies have seen significant correlation that fish oil supplements are safe adjunctive therapy to improve the therapeutic benefits of antidepressants. It shows how taking fish oil supplements along side antidepressants can help relieve depression in patients whom suffer from MS. After tree months the of the patients receiving fish oils raw data is showing most of the subjects had an upgraded MADRS scale (Montgomery-Asberg depression rating scale) as well as their BDI score (eck Depression Inventory).
Their secondary outcomes of this study are also showing promise, that the change in IFN-g levels are correlating with the MADRS scale test results, concurring with their hypothesis. The current findings from this study were published in Am J Psychiatry. 2002 Mar;159(3):477-9. And will continue to be published here on after.
