Marine Lipid Oils Omega 3

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential for health, and most of us don’t get adequate amounts of omega 3 EFA’s (Essential Fatty Acids) in our diets.  Omega 3 EFA’s have many functions in our bodies, but they are most often supplemented to improve cardiac health, and mental function.

The most common omega 3 EFA’s are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).  Fish are good dietary sources of all three omega 3 fatty acids.  Deep water or cold water oily fish, such as salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies and sardines, are excellent sources of omega 3 EFA’s and contain omega 6:omega 3 ratios of 1:7.  Other oily fish are also rich in omega 3 fatty acids, but do not contain as much as cold water fish.

Using Marine Lipid Oils Omega 3 Supplements

Many people take marine lipid oils omega 3 nutritional supplements for heart health, and that is a good choice under most circumstances.  There are some cautions you need to take with using fish oil supplements, however.

  1. Deep water fish can be contaminated with mercury, PCB’s and dioxins.  These toxins get introduced into the food chain when fertilizers and industrial toxins are washed into lakes and rivers.  They are absorbed by marine plants, which are eaten by fish, which are eaten by other fish.  The contaminants get more concentrated as they move up the food chain, and deep water fish can have toxic amounts of the substances. So remember to always select a high quality marine oil that has had the toxins removed!

For that reason, you should use marine lipid oils omega 3 supplements that have the contaminants removed.

  1. Omega 3 oils interfere with clot formation.  Therefore, people who have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinning medication should use caution when taking fish oil supplements.
  1. People with congestive heart failure should not take omega 3 supplements.  Too much omega 3 fatty acid can worsen congestive heart failure and lead to sudden death.

Fish oil supplements are a good source of omega 3 EFA’s and will provide adequate amounts of them for most people.
