Omega 3 fatty acids are necessary for normal function of every cell in your body. Omega 3’s have been shown to have beneficial effects in people with cardiovascular risk factors and heart disease, in people with neurophysiological problems such as depression, in people with asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and a number of other diseases. Research is beginning to show similar beneficial effects in people with kidney disease.
Our kidneys need more fat than other organs. They need a fatty cushion around them, and they depend heavily on essential fatty acids to meet their energy needs. Exactly how kidney functions and omega 3 fatty acids are connected is unclear, but several studies demonstrate that omega 3’s are essential to good kidney function.
Studies of people with chronic renal failure suggest that those who take omega 3 supplements retain better kidney function for a longer time than those who don’t.
People with IgA nephropathy (autoimmune kidney disease) seem to benefit from taking omega 3 fatty acids, and some have experienced dramatic improvement.
In one study, people who had kidney transplants received either omega 3 fatty acids or a placebo. The group who received omega 3’s had improved glomerular filtration rates (the rate at which the kidneys can remove toxins from the blood), increased renal blood flow and decreased mean arterial pressure.
Mean arterial pressure is an important measurement in renal disease for several reasons. The kidneys help control blood pressure by secreting substances that cause our arteries to constrict, raising blood pressure. When the kidneys are not getting enough blood flow for their own health, they secrete these substances. When mean arterial pressure is normal, it is one indicator that your kidneys are functioning adequately.
Researchers hypothesize several ways that omega 3 fatty acids may work in the kidneys, in addition to providing for basic energy needs. They may help relax the blood vessels in the kidneys, or they may exert an anti-prostaglandin effect that decreases inflammation. Although they are still searching for the exact mechanisms of action on kidney function of omega 3’s, it is certain that they do produce a beneficial effect.![]() | ![]() | |
