Flax Seed Omega 3 6 9 Information

Supplementing your diet to make sure you get enough omega oils is a good idea for most people, especially those who eat a Western diet.  The most common ways of supplementing omega oils is with fish oil or flax seed.  Before you decide which type of supplement to use, you need some flax seed omega 3 6 9 information.

Advantages of Using Flax Seed

Flax seed is an easily obtainable alternative to fish oil supplements.  Some people prefer not to use fish oil.  In addition, some vegetarians do not eat fish or fish derivatives.

Disadvantages of Using Flax Seed

For those who do not have a problem with taking fish oil supplements, flax seed has some decided disadvantages in comparison to fish oil.

Flax seed contains only omega 3  and omega 6 oils.  It has high levels of only one omega 3 oil:  alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).  Our bodies convert ALA to the other omega 3 oils, but the rate of conversion is uncertain.  Our bodies use the other forms (EPA and DHA) more readily than they use ALA. So fish oil is preferable.

Whole flax seed is relatively stable, but both ground flax seed and flax seed oil oxidize rapidly, breaking down the omega 3 oils in them.

Using Flax Seed

The flax seed omega 3 6 9 information you need in order to use flax seed effectively includes:

Minimum daily allowances have not been established for omega oils.  The recommended dose of flax seed oil is 1-2 tablespoons per day.  The recommended dose of flax seed is 1 tablespoon two to three times a day or two to four tablespoons once a day.
