Recent research has demonstrated the importance of omega 3 fatty acids in preventing chronic inflammatory diseases, such as arthritis and heart disease, and in nervous system development in infants. Continuing research suggests that these important macronutrients have a broad range of health benefits.
Many people take omega 3 nutritional supplements in the form of fish oil in order to enjoy these health benefits. There are some concerns with the use of fish oil supplements, however.
One remedy to some of the concerns with using fish oil is to find another source of omega 3 oils. Although plant sources of omega 3 oils are available, they do not have the high amounts of DHA and EPA (two essential omega 3 oils) that fish does. Cold water fish get their omega 3 oils from algae, and scientists are looking to the algae as a better source.
A fermentation process for producing omega 3 fish oil is being developed. The oil is obtained from cultures of omega 3-containing algae that can produce significantly larger amounts of omega 3 EFA’s than fish can.
Another fermentation process for producing omega 3 fish oil utilizes lactobacillus cultures. Lactobacillus is a bacterium that ferments milk products. The bacterium is genetically modified to produce omega 3 oils. The altered bacterium produces omega 3-enriched yoghurt and other fermented dairy products. It is also possible to control the types and ratios of the omega 3 oils in the products with this technology.
Although there are other concerns with using a fermentation process for producing omega 3 fish oil, such as concerns about genetically modified products, ongoing research should provide us with ways to obtain fish oil supplements that are pure, safe and environmentally friendly.
