What are fatty acids? Put simply, they are the basic building blocks of all fats and can be divided into saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids. The fatty acids found in fish oil are the Omega 3 type fatty acids and come under the polyunsaturated group. They are classed as essential fatty acids or EFAs as the body cannot produce them itself, and has to obtain them from diet.
The two most important of the Omega 3 EFAs are EPA, eicosapentaenoic acid and DHA, docosahexaenoic acid. These essential nutrients are found in high quantities in oily fish such as Mackerel, Halibut, Tuna, Herring, Trout, Sardines and Salmon.
Although our bodies need both EPA and DHA, there are suggestions that the beneficial effects of EPA can be somewhat restricted by the presence of DHA. Although DHA is of particular importance for pregnant mothers and small children, mainly for the healthy development of the brain, EPA is proving to have extraordinary health benefits for everyone. The body can also convert EPA into DHA when enough EPA is present, but this process is inefficient the other way round.
Countless studies have now demonstrated that EPA can reduce the risk of cardiac arrest and significantly improve the symptoms of cardiovascular conditions, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, allergies, mood-related disorders, and a growing number of other ailments. It also gives our immune system a boost and can generally improve our overall physical and mental health and wellbeing.
