Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), one of the essential Omega 3 fatty acids found in oily fish and fish oil supplements, is rapidly gaining recognition for the positive effect it can have on the symptoms of Attention deficit disorder or ADD. At a basic level, EPA appears to reduce inflammation, increase blood flow to the brain and improve communication in the neural networks.
Fish oil high in EPA has already achieved considerable success in the treatment of depressive and other mood-related disorders and is now recognised by many professionals as the most important fatty acid for efficient functioning of the brain on a day to day basis. Researchers such as Peet, Stoll, Richardson and Puri have all reported on the positive effect that EPA fish oil can have on the brain and how it functions, but two studies in particular have focused on learning disorders, including ADD and ADHD with exciting results.
For example, the Durham trials in the UK found that supplementing with fish oil high in EPA improved concentration, attention span and academic performance, with reading age improvements of up to 4 years. A similar study conducted in Australia and led by researcher Natalie Sinn also used high EPA fish oil and found that those taking the fish oil showed improvements in attention and vocabulary as well as impulsiveness and hyperactivity and reported it was better than Ritalin for ADHD.
ADD is much the same as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) but without the hyperactivity aspect. Although usually thought of as a childhood disorder, it is increasingly being recognised that adults can also suffer from ADD. Symptoms of ADD include:
What is particularly interesting is that several research studies have identified a lack of essential fatty acids in those suffering from ADD, ADHD and other learning and mood and behaviour related disorders. Why this should be the case, no one really knows but it is thought that it could be related to a lack of essential fatty acids in the diet, an inability to metabolise and/or absorb the fatty acids, or perhaps a higher than normal requirement for essential fatty acids. Boys have a greater need for essential fatty acids, which might explain why 3 times as many boys than girls are diagnosed with ADD or ADHD.
The UK and Australian studies indicate that Fish oil with a high EPA content could possibly offer an effective and alternative approach to attention deficit disorders in the future, however, more research is required. Apart from the already well documented health benefits to be gained from taking fish oil supplements, one major advantage is that it is a safe and convenient way to increase intake of the Omega 3 fatty acids that are so necessary for physical and mental wellbeing.Omega 3 fish oils Pure EPA is available exclusively from mind 1st.
