Does fish oil cause sleepiness?

Research would suggest that far from causing sleepiness, fish oil can help to regulate sleeping patterns and improve the general quality of our sleep. Why this should be the case is most likely due to the combined properties of the Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil.  EPA, for example, is known to have a direct impact on the functioning of the brain.  It reduces inflammation, thins the blood and helps it flow more efficiently to the brain, reduces stress and anxiety levels, balances the hormones, boosts the immune system and even has a mood elevating effect. It is not surprising therefore that fish oil might also have an impact on our sleep.

One research study, which was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggested that babies born to mothers who had eaten fish during pregnancy had better sleep patterns in the first 2 days of life than those who had eaten less fish. Studies by Peet and Horrobin in 2002 involving ethyl-epa and its effect on depression, found that supplementing with 1gr of EPA daily not only made a difference to the symptoms of depression, those taking it also experienced improved sleep as well as other benefits.

Sleep disturbances in the form of hypersomnia (sleeping too much) and insomnia (inability to sleep) are likely to affect most of us at some point in our lives.  These episodes will usually be temporary and directly attributed to a specific cause, for example when under periods of stress or worry. Alcohol consumption and even some foods can interrupt our sleep. However, for those who are suffering with any kind of depressive illness or other mood-related disorder, sleep disturbances are much more common and are not only distressing, they can lead to a worsening of symptoms as well as other health problems.
