Directions for Taking Omega 3

The directions for taking omega 3 will vary according to (1) your physiological requirements, (2) the amount of omega 3 in whatever you are taking and (3) your tolerance for omega 3 supplements.

Physiological Requirements

Different people have different omega 3 requirements.  It is recommended that most people take 1-3 grams of omega 3 per day.  People with certain health conditions may, however, have higher or lower recommendations.

People with high triglyceride levels may need more omega 3, usually 2-4 grams per day.  Those who have high blood pressure or rheumatoid arthritis may also require higher doses.

Information about how much omega 3 is useful for people with diabetes or thyroid disease is conflicting and confusing.  In the past, people have recommended that these people avoid omega 3 EFA’s, but recent research suggests that omega 3 can be very helpful in treating and preventing diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes, and hypothyroidism.

At this time, research indicates that one group of people should avoid omega 3 EFA’s:  those with severe congestive heart failure or chronic recurrent angina.  Omega 3 can make those conditions worse, and may even cause death.

The optimal dose of omega 3 has not been established for several conditions, such as depression, ADHD, weight loss, and many other conditions which are currently under investigation.

The Amount of Omega 3

Following the directions for taking omega 3 on most supplement bottles will usually give you about 1 gram per day of omega 3.  To determine how much of the supplement you need to take, divide the amount of omega 3 you want to take by the amount in each capsule or teaspoonful.

Your Tolerance

Some people develop mild digestive intolerance to high doses of omega 3.  This is usually resolved by taking the daily dose in divided doses.  That is, instead of taking the entire dose of omega 3 at one time, divide it into two or three smaller doses.  Most people find it convenient to take omega 3 with meals.
