Recent studies have demonstrated that taking omega 3 supplements has a positive effect on the rate of cardiovascular disease in normal subjects. Most research, however, has not included high risk individuals, such as those with type 2 diabetes. Because type 2 diabetics have high levels of triglycerides, and because omega 3 supplements seem to lower triglyceride levels, it would be helpful to know if omega 3 supplements are indicated for this population, also.
The diabetes 2 omega 3 supplements research is somewhat equivocal. In 2002, a study published in Reuter’s Health Report showed that obese women who were vulnerable to type 2 diabetes showed significant improvement in insulin sensitivity after taking omega 3 supplements for 90 days. This is promising research, but the study only contained 12 women, so the sample size is too small to be significant.
Another study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2002 involved 59 hypertensive males with type 2 diabetes. This study found that, although triglyceride levels improved, fasting glucose levels worsened. The findings of this study differ from the findings of similar small studies in Paris and Naples, where researchers found improvement in triglycerides without any effect on serum glucose levels.
If we were going to draw conclusions from diabetes 2 omega 3 supplements research, the study to look at would be the longitudinal study of American nurses that has been ongoing for the past couple of decades. Circulation published a portion of this study in 2003 that suggests that fish oil supplements are helpful to women with type 2 diabetes. 5103 women with type 2 diabetes were followed for sixteen years in the study. Those who ate fish regularly or took omega 3 supplements had fewer cardiovascular incidents and lower mortality rates.
Clearly, more research needs to be done in this fragile population. If, as the American nurse study suggests, omega 3 supplementation decreases mortality, it could become the standard of care for people with type 2 diabetes.Omega 3 fish oils Pure EPA is available exclusively from mind 1st.
