Daily Intake of Omega 3

Daily intake of omega 3 essential fatty acids (EFA’s) is a good way to protect your health.  Omega 3’s should be part of a healthy diet, or you can add an omega 3 supplement.  The health benefits of a daily intake of omega 3 are so high that many doctors recommend omega 3 supplements for their patients who are at risk for cardiovascular disease, pregnant patients, patients with hyperlipidemia, diabetics and insulin resistant patients, those with inflammatory bowel disease and patients with neuropsychiatric problems, including depression

Cardiovascular Disease

The benefits of omega 3 fatty acids in heart disease have been well-established.  Omega 3 fatty acids have an antithrombotic effect that may prevent heart attack.  They normalize the lipids in the blood that cause atherosclerotic plaques.  They may lower blood pressure, and they have an antiarrhythmic effect (help keep the heart rhythm regular).  The American Heart Association recommends that everyone add omega 3-rich foods to their diets.  They further recommend that people who are at risk for cardiovascular disease should take at least one gram of omega 3 supplement per day.

Pregnancy

Developing fetuses need lots of omega 3 fatty acids for healthy brain, nervous system and eye development.  The baby may deplete the mother’s omega 3 reserves to meet his needs.  Moms who take omega 3 supplements during pregnancy are less likely to have premature births and less likely to suffer postpartum depression.  One large study showed that babies whose mothers took omega 3 supplements during pregnancy have better cognitive, motor and social development.

Hyperlipidemia

Omega 3 fatty acids lower cholesterol, but the effect on HDL and LDL, two types of cholesterol, is variable.  Omega 3 fatty acids are, however, very useful in treating high triglycerides.  FDA approval has been granted for the use of omega 3’s in treating hypertriglyceridemia. 

Diabetes and Insulin Resistance

Omega 3 EFA’s are helpful in treating type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.  They improve insulin resistance, and lower the triglycerides that are usually elevated in diabetes.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Both ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease respond to omega 3 supplements.  Omega 3’s are also poorly absorbed in inflammatory bowel disease, so supplementation is needed to meet the body’s normal metabolic needs.

Neuropsychiatric Problems

Studies have shown that omega 3 supplements are helpful in treating bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and autism.
