Cellular Absorption Omega 3

Omega 3 oils have a lot to do with cellular absorption, and the cellular level is where omega 3 oils have their effects.

All cells are surrounded by a cell membrane.  This membrane is semi-permeable, which means it allows some substances to pass through the membrane, and prevents others from passing through.  The cell membrane can allow some substances to pass into the cell, but not out of it, too.

Much of the cell membrane is made up of fat.  If the cell membrane has high levels of saturated fats in it, it is stiff and relatively impermeable.  If the membrane has high levels of omega 3 oils instead, it is flexible and more permeable.  In cellular absorption, omega 3 oils are the gatekeepers.

This is an extremely important metabolic function.  For instance, if the cell membrane keeps insulin out, the cell is insulin resistant.  Nutrients are stored in fat cells, while metabolically active cells starve because they cannot use the nutrients without insulin.

The same thing is true of some other hormones, such as thyroid.  There is a form of thyroid resistance, where the cell membrane is relatively impermeable to thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone controls metabolism within the cells.  These people may have normal circulating levels of thyroid hormone, but their cells are unable to metabolize nutrients efficiently because they do not have enough of the hormone they need.  The result can be the symptoms of hypothyroidism even when thyroid levels are normal.

Another example is the transmission of electrical impulses.  Omega 3 oils regulate certain “gates” that ions flow through, and that controls whether or not a cell responds to an electrical impulse.  This is important in maintaining a stable heart rhythm, in muscle movement and in brain function.

In addition to controlling cellular absorption, omega 3 oils also stabilize the cell membranes.  They provide the structure that cells need and open and close the gates so that cells can function healthily.
