Atrial Fibrillation and Fish Oil
Beginning in 2005 in Melbourne, Australia an interventional study was conducted on the benefits of fish oil. In this study they were trying to understand if oil supplements reduce recurrence of Atrial Fibrillation following DC Cardioversion, or in some other way may benefit the patients with rhythm disturbances.
Atrial fibrillation is a heart condition that can sometimes be successfully treated by a Cardioversion. The process of Cardioversion involves resetting the heart back to its normal “setting” with the use of electric current. Frequently patients experience the Atrial Fibrillation to recur, day’s weeks or even months after the Cardioversion therapy.
Current evidence from this study, it is still in process and others shows that fish oils may be beneficial to patients with rhythm disturbances. This is a randomized, single blind, placebo controlled experiment. Paul Sparks is the head researcher on this study as well as the contact. The Australian Department of Health and Ageing Therapeutic Goods Administration will publish this study, when it is finished in its entirety.
The study involves supplementing the diets of those patients with Atrial Fibrillation as well as those who do not and are considered healthy. Since there is a control group some would be receiving a placebo. All participants will be monitored to see if there was a decrease in Atrial Fibrillation as well as any other pending benefits along side. The inclusion participants will need to have persistent Atrial Fibrillation as well as taking Warafin.
This study in its current state has shown there is a slight correlation with fish oils and reducing the heart disturbances of Atrial Fibrillation. Considering that this research is still being conducted the researchers insist that over the remaining time of this study they hope to more than “slightly” prove, but prove there is a strong correlation, and indeed fish oils, or simply omega-3 fatty acids reduce or completely diminish rhythm disturbances or Atrial Fibrillation. | | |
