Diet is the foundation for mental health. You actually need omega-3 for your brain cells so they function properly.

Antioxidant Omega 3

Both antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acids are essential nutrients that we need to get in our diets.  Both are necessary to keep our bodies functioning well at the cellular level.  Antioxidant and omega 3 supplies affect every single cell, every organ system, every process in our bodies.  That’s how critical they are to good health.

Omega 3

Omega 3 fatty acids are found in fish and in certain plants.  Fatty acids are macronutrients.  The three macronutrients necessary for human growth, development and functioning are fats, carbohydrates and proteins.  We get all of our energy from these three types of nutrients.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants are micronutrients.  We need smaller amounts of them, and they are necessary for us to use macronutrients efficiently.  Vitamins and minerals are micronutrients.

Antioxidants help prevent oxidation, which is a chemical reaction that uses oxygen to break substances down into other substances.  The byproducts of oxidation are thought to cause cell damage, aging and some diseases.  Some of the more common antioxidants are Vitamins A, C and E and selenium.

Antioxidants and Omega 3

Omega 3 fatty acids oxidize rapidly and easily when exposed to air (which contains oxygen).  Antioxidants are often found naturally in the same foods as omega 3 fatty acids.  For instance, some unrefined fish oil contains Vitamin A as well as omega 3 fatty acids.  Flaxseed, which is high in omega 3 fatty acids, also contains Vitamin E.

Vitamin E is frequently added to fish oil or flaxseed oil to keep it from oxidizing in the bottle.  (Fish oil and flaxseed oil should also be protected from light and air by storing them in opaque containers, and they should be refrigerated to retard oxidation.)

For the same reason, many people take an antioxidant omega3 combination supplement.  It gives you the benefit of both the omega 3 fatty acids, and of the antioxidant.
