Acid reflux and fish oil Omega 3 fatty acids

Side effects associated with taking fish oil are very rare but if they do occur, they are generally not considered serious.  The most common side effects reported in study trials are fishy burps and heartburn, which is also often referred to as acid reflux.

Heartburn or acid reflux is characterised by pain or a burning sensation in the chest around the breastbone area, which is basically caused by inflammation.  There are many reasons why heartburn can occur, including obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and certain foods - particularly spicy foods and eating late at night.  Most of us will experience heartburn at some point in our lives, but these bouts will usually be short lived, lasting a few hours at most.

The term acid reflux, however, is also sometimes used to describe something else, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease or GORD. This condition arises when the contents of the stomach repeatedly flow back into the oesophagus because the opening at the lower end of the oesophagus has relaxed too much allowing stomach acids to escape.  The resulting inflammation causes the discomfort and over time, can damage the oesophagus and lead to greater problems. Heartburn or acid reflux is actually one of the main symptoms associated with GORD.

Fish oil contains important Omega 3 fatty acids that are essential for good health and in particular, fish oil that has a high content of EPA or Eicosapentaenoic acid has been found to have powerful anti-inflammatory properties.  EPA helps to produce a certain type of eicosanoid, which can reduce underlying inflammation in the body. It also offers some protection against developing heart disease, arthritis, and other inflammatory-based conditions.

There are certain precautions you can take to minimise the risk of experiencing any side effects from taking fish oil.  For example, by taking the fish oil along with food, keeping the fish oil in the fridge and, if you opt for only high-grade concentrated fish oil you get a pure and stronger oil so will not need to take as many capsules each day.
